Duck run with fenced in backyard?

Hey all!

As I'm rushing to get this duck coop and run built before these buggers are ready for the outdoor life, (it blows my mind how fast they grow!) I'm trying to decide if I need a fenced in duck run.

I have a small 2000 sq foot backyard which is fully fenced in with 6 foot walls.
We have a dog but he is literally scared of everything so I don't believe he'll be an issue.

Half of the backyard has river rock laid down and half is grass. I dont anticipate mud being an issue. Their water and food area will be on the rocks (easy cleaning). I'm planning on laying down smaller pebbles on the river rock to make it easier on their feet.

Do you guys think I need to build a fenced run or can they just free range?

Welcome to BYC. If your yard is fenced I don't think you need a fenced pen, but keep in mind that they will be very hard on any landscaping you have.

Where will they sleep at night? They will need a predator proof place to sleep at night.

I'm about halfway done with their coop! Its 4'x8' and will be totally secure for them. I appreciate the advice. This will save me a ton of work!

Planning for water might be your biggest hurdle in your climate.

Yeah getting them water is going to be hard in the dead of winter. They sure wont be getting in the kiddy pool everyday.
