Hello,
We have four ducks two Swedish blacks and two buffs, all four have been laying steady one egg a day this spring but for the last week we are only getting three eggs in the morning and one of the buffs is acting strange. She is keeping her head tucked and doing a lot more talking...also spending more time alone away from other ducks.
Is it possible she has eggs stuck inside her?

Thanks for any help, Shiyah

Does sound like broody behavior, do you have any calcium gluconate to give her? How long has she been acting like this? usually if they are egg bound it takes them out in a couple days. So you may be able to rule it out if it's been longer. But Calcium gluconate can get an egg moving it works to get the muscles contracting. Very good product to have in our arsenal if we have females. Also if egg bound they will spend alot of time of the nest with no results and their vent will pulse and their tail will pump.

Thank you Miss Lydia,
I will pick up some calcium gluconate tomorrow, she has been acting strange for about a week..is it safe to give her if she is not egg bound?

Is she scrunching her head up like this photo? Because if she is, that's textbook broody duck behavior. She doesn't necessarily need to be on a nest yet. Her mood could just be changing to that time of the year.

Oh my gosh my broody duck makes me think of a sumo wrestler the was she is puffed up walking around like that. It’s quite funny and the squeaks they make. And no it won’t hurt her to have a dose of Calcium gluconate 1 ml over a tasty treat.

My Buffs are almost 6 yrs old and have never been broody of course being hatched with Runners might have something to do with it since the Runners can’t be still long enough to brood. My Muscovy are my broodies.

I love finding these bits of knowledge even on older posts - I'm still in my first year of duck ownership. My runner females have been laying consistently for...a couple of months now and I've noticed their behavior has changed somewhat towards me. I still can get them into their house at night with treats and they love when I flip rocks and things over to find worms, but they do a different sort of quack, and a couple do that hunch now too. This seems to explain it as in every other way they are normal. Always learning!
