Duck travel

There is someone on BYC who takes their ducks on walks - just walking. No leashes or anything. Was it @Weeg? Or @Quatie? I can't remember who.
I think @KaleIAm takes her ducks on walks. You're right about no leashes.

@Overo Mare takes hers on walks too and those girls are very smart and actually listen whenever she calls them back from going too far or whenever it's time to turn around.

I walk my ducks on leashes around the neighborhood. I just use small dog harnesses and leashes. most of the time I have to carry them though. They haven’t gotten used to walking with them on. A couple don’t mind wearing the harness but don’t like the leash

I have been wanting to get my duck out of the backyard for a while now, whether that is for a trip to a nearby creek or just walking/exploring the neighborhood. (She is almost 5 months old and we hatched her.) We bought a harness/leash for her, and it fit fine, but I could tell that she hated it. Today, I tried to put it on her again, but she would not stay still and clearly remembered how much she didn’t like it. Another option I have is a wagon that isn’t too high off the ground (one foot high at most). I placed her favorite snacks in it but she still refused to stay and immediately jumped out.

How can I get her to trust either one of these options, or would another method of travel (like a backpack) work better?
Yeah, some ducks are confident and love people, and cope okay in new environments, but most will find it stressful. They are prey animals, and being away from home, and their flock, is scary to them.

My girlie, Dougie, loves people, having imprinted as a duckling.
I once brought her to the house during a family party, and she was super excited by it. Met the new people, followed me around the room, ate some blueberries, then went back out to her sister.
She also coped well during a vet trip, but I could tell she was still a bit uncomfortable.

I would never take her away from home for fun, it'd be stressful for her.

Is yours an only duck, or does she have a flock?
