I have a year old Pekin who was just walking along fine one minute and then spread out her wings and put her head to the ground as if to balance herself. She keeps spreading out her wings when she is walking. It is so strange. Any ideas?

She doesn't sound well. It could be anything from a virus, an infection, an injury . . . .

Can you tell us more about her environment? Flock size, makeup, what she eats, where she spends her time, any changes lately?

I would get her into a lukewarm tub of water and watch her for half an hour or so, try to see what's up, give her vitamins and electrolytes, and maybe keep her in a clean warm safe sickbay overnight.

Thank you for your response Amiga. Daisy has been fine the last two days. I wonder if the wind was bothering her. I have been keeping an eye on them all. It was so quick and passed. Strange. I did pick her up and gave her a good once over.

To answer your questions: She is one of 11 ducks all between 9 months and 2 years old. She is one of the mates to our Alpha male duck and best friend to our Alpha female. She is the most docile of all the ducks but no one will mess with her because of her "friends" lol. All my ducks sleep in 3 enclosed dog houses (they shut and lock at night) and live in a fenced in yard that is 100 foot square. We do sometimes allow them to free range outside the yard, but haven't lately because it has been so windy. We have 3 kiddie pools for them that we change when they aren't frozen. She also shares her yard with 30 chickens and 2 roosters. I feed table scraps, whole corn, cracked corn, layena, scratch and the ducks get either get spinach, lettuce or some green daily. Crushed oyster shell and grit as wanted. In the summer they only eat from the garden, their choice. I did feed them spinach last week and noticed a recall. They have a very large open sided barn as part of their yard and she was in that, shielded from the wind when this happened.

Thanks again for your thoughts, Tracylea
