Help, my duckling was running around on the ground and he ate some dog food! I can feel it in his crop. Will he be okay? DO i have to worry, or should i attempt to force regurgitation. I am just unsure as to whether he'll be ok w/ the big chunks of kibble in him.

I give my ducks cat kibble all the time. they love it and pick it out of their feed like it tastes as good as worms, lettuce, slugs, or dirt.

Are you sure that it is stuck in her crop? Is she having trouble breathing or drinking?

I suspect he will be fine. Has he been given grit yet? Since ducklings need to have water 24/7, as long as he has plenty of water it should dissolve in a little while.

If he has not had any grit yet, you might offer just a little on their regular food, maybe a teaspoon for tonight, and that could help process anything he ingests.

Now, if he has been noodling around outside, he has probably already eaten some small stones and sand, so that is covered.

How is he acting? Is he opening his mouth as if yawning? Shaking his head?

My ducks have gotten into some stray pieces of dog food before. He'll be fine

Actually i purposely let him eat a little sand in the yard earlier for the reason that I do not have actual grit to give him. He is acting perfectly fine though. Its not stuck in his throat. I know what he looks like though when he has something stuck in his throat as the first time i fed him i forgot to give him water and he acted as you said.

Okay, sounds like a non-event.

Bravo for checking it out! Ducklings need people who pay attention and do not always assume everything is fine when something unusual happens.

That's a daily treat for my Muscovy. She will do just about anything for dog kibbles, so I use it to train her. The dogs don't eat the dog food in my house,it's for the duck!

I've fed ducks cat food before. Most pet food is grain-based anyway and the extra protein every now and then won't hurt them. Ducks are omnivores, so some animal protein is OK as long as it won't choke them.
