Hi feathered families, I have been seeing a lot of constipated issues on here so I thought I'd share my experience with how I finally found a solution that worked for me and a 3 day old duckling. I used a q-tip dipped in warm water to the crusted poo covered vent area until it finally loosened from the whole area then I kept it lubed with vasoline around the whole area fuss and all so it wouldn't get dried on again. Then I added coffee to her water(sense it helps me)lol. and a little cayro syrup. not a whole lot of either, at first I added a bit more a little at a time and by the end of the day the harded worked its way out and I started feeding only wet duckling food till her system got used to it and scrambled eggs seperate. I always feed newbys scrambled eggs first it seems to help them want to eat quicker. It seems best way to avoid poo issue is to wait at least a day after hatching before letting them eat or drink since they are still feding off the yolk during incubation. once they pass he baby poo I call it, Just like an infants, it all goes smooth. I think I rushed into feeding worried they were thirsty. I havnt lost any since. Hope it helps

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I'd probably ditch the coffee. For the duckings! Not you!!
Its the only thing that has worked and she is doing great I havnt lost any since. I am so thankful because each loss I had kills me they are my kids not just a pet.. but its really weak coffee added to her water not full brew, shed be bouncing off the walls if she had a cup of my coffee straight. my dad says a spoon can stand up straight in it its so strong, lol but thanks

The caffeine in the coffee isn't good for them.
Pasty butt is usually caused by the brooder being too hot which is common with brooders that have essentially no ventilation and are overcrowded.
Feeding dry starter also contributes to constipation. I've always fed wet mash. Even to the adults.
The only time I've dealt with pasty butt is in the first few days after a chick was shipped. I cleaned her up, have her a small dose of coconut oil and she never got it again. No need for coffee.
