duckling dead I feel awful!

Today I checked on my ten baby ducks before going to drivers ed and they were all fine and healthy looing, I got back 2 hours later and one of my ducklings was lying there upside down with his little feet all streched out, eyes wide open, dead. I dont know what happened to him (there were no puncture marks) but it could have been my dog. He is dead and I shouldnt have let that happen! I feel like a terrible 'mother'! How can I ever forgive myself for not protecting this poor little guy?!?! All I can think is that when I was sitting in class, whining about how bored I was, my little duck was scared and alone and dying and I should have been there to save him

I'm so sorry! This same thing has happened to me, and frankly, sometimes there is just no obvious rhyme or reason. One time I got home from the feed store with 3 healthy-appearing ducklings only to watch one drop dead before my eyes 20 minutes later. Possibilities I've considered have included injury, suffocation, and cold or heat intolerance, but I never knew for sure. It sounds unlikely to me that your dog is responsible if none of the other ducklings show signs of injury or distress. I'm afraid we just have to accept that where animals are concerned we are going to occasionally suffer losses. Please don't blame yourself for something you had no knowledge of or control over.

Oh, just wanted to add that I eat my chicken eggs because I figure they're going to lay them anyway, but good for you being almost vegan!

I think its happened to lots of us on here but it is still so sad-Im still mad at myself because I didnt catch that my little guys had a bug in time. I would say its not the dog though. Lots of people would just say thats life on the farm-but I think of mine as my pets and love them so much-but dont beat yourself up about it.
