One of my F&W Runner ducklings experienced a seizure yesterday morning and then died right in my arms. The seizure lasted about 10 minutes and that was the first time I’ve ever seen that happen to that particular duckling. He was 3 weeks old and seemed to be in good health. He had been eating Purina Flock Raiser his whole life and his water had Nutri-Drench mixed in with it.

I will say though, that a couple weeks ago a gosling did topple over him while running. I don’t know if that could’ve caused a head injury triggering seizures? After that gosling fell over him, he couldn’t stretch his neck for about a day and acted weaker than his other duck friends. I gave him a drop of Nutri-Drench orally when I noticed he was weak and then he improved, but still wasn’t like he used to be.

He was swimming with his duck friends yesterday morning while I supervised them. They swam for about 15 minutes before I took them out and let them dry off. I had cleaned the feeder and waterer before I refilled them with fresh food and water. They all went off toward the direction of the feeder and waterer, except that one duckling. Instead he wandered through the fence and into the pen. I picked him up and set him down by his friends, who were now eating and drinking.

That’s when the seizure started happening. It looked a lot like this;

I took him in my house and gave him a drop of Nutri-Drench orally, even though I didn’t think it was vitamin B deficiency being the cause of the seizure, I just wanted to be on the safe side. He lifted his head up to swallow, and I thought the seizure was about over, but the seizure went on and eventually he passed. It was a sad moment, considering this is my first time owning birds, so that was my first death within the flock.

Any ideas what caused the seizure? What could be going on within my flock? What should I do? Thanks in advance.

Even humans die from SUDEP, that was my constant worry when our then 3 year old was diagnosed with epilepsy (he’s been seizure free 2 years now). It could be a brain malformation, or numerous other things. Sorry for your loss, but I believe SUDEP generally doesn’t have much explanation to it in humans, let alone animals.
