My ~2 week old Mallard duckling has been having seizures on/off. It started last Friday where she had 6 seizures from 3 am to 7 am. I took her to the vet that day and by the time the appointment was, she was already back to normal and the vet couldn't figure it out. She has now had ~7-8 seizures starting at 4 am up until now. My theory is that she ate some alder seeds that are all over our backyard right now. I looked up if alders were toxic, and it turns out the reds ones are, and looks just like the tree in our neighbors yard that's hanging into ours and dropping seeds all over into my ducks pen! The first time she had the seizures, I remember the day or two before she was trying to eat some of the seeds, but I didn't think anything of it. and yesterday she tried to eat more and she was having seizures again. Both times she hadn't gained any weight through the night and actually lost a little bit.

I don't think it's worth taking her back to that vet, she didn't seem to know anything about ducks.

I gave her some electrolyte mix in her water; but after thinking it may be the alder seeds, I gave her some activated charcoal to try and flush it out.

She is imprinted on me and I am very attached to her, if you know of anything else I should be doing, please tell! It is very hard watching her seize!

Are you cleaning the seeds up? and yes the activated charcoal is good at removing toxins you just need to follow directions. Is your duckling in a brooder inside your duck pen, at her tiny age I'd keep her away from those seeds and try to get them cleaned up, Maybe speak to your neighbors about doing a bit of tree limb trimming.

Yes, I am cleaning up all the seeds today. She is in a brooder in my bedroom, but she follows me outside sometimes when I do chores, or else she cries when I leave her. I am hoping to talk to the neighbor about cutting the whole tree down, it's half dead and doesn't do anything for privacy anyway.

Hopefully they will co operate especially if you tell them about the duckling. The reason I mentioned about making sure you follow direction when using the Activate charcoal is it can make them constipated if they are given too much. do you have directions from the sticky?

Yeah, I've looked at the sticky. I used it for one of my other ducks when she was vomiting last summer. It seemed to do the trick. How long should I leave the cup of charcoal slurry in her brooder? She's had it for about an hour. I feel like I should take it out now, and give her the electrolyte water?

I'd take it out for now and then give it to her again in late afternoon, for same length of time, has she had any more seizures? it says' up to six times so i think you'd be safe offering it to her a few more times today.

She has not had any more seizures since I started this thread (she had one while I was writing it). She seems a little more alert and talkative as usual. Thanks for the help!

Well, she is completely normal now. This was the same case on the last set of seizures. She hasn't had any more episodes and has gained 1/2 oz since yesterday, poops are normal (they were all white), she's energetic, ect.

We haven't talked to the neighbor yet, we don't see him very often; but I won't be taking her in the backyard for awhile anyway. It seems my adult ducks know better than to eat them... I hope.

Sure glad to hear she is doing good now, Yep hopefully the adults know better, seems the littles want to taste everything. I'd still talk to the neighbor about getting rid of that tree.
