Hello, first time posting but long time stalker. This place has been so wonderful and informative!
So, I'm incubating some eggs, first time and unplanned. I've read All the articles and posts. My question is, the duckling pipped at the small end. It's beak is out, about 1/3 -1/2 out...do I need to assist? Does it need more open to breath better? It moves, trying to get out I assume and it will open its beak, I'm just worried!
Attached photo so you can see how much is out.

What day is baby on?
How long has it been since baby first pipped?
By opening its beak, do you mean baby is making chewing motions? Is baby pushing their bill out slowly, like they’re stretching?

Pipping at the small end, this baby will take longer from pip to hatch, as they skipped the internal pip stage.

They should be fine with air for now. I wouldn’t assist yet, unless it’s been days without progress, and baby appears to be stuck.

I don't really know what day exactly. My welsh harlequin was sitting on a nest, but then I noticed it smelling. I took the eggs but before tossing them I wanted to make sure I wasn't throwing away babies. We'll 4 had signs of life, this one much farther along than the others. Going by air cell size when I marked it 2 days ago, I would say today is 26 or 27?

It just pipped early evening, it's almost 10:30 here now so, around 4-5ish.
The opening of the beak is more like its trying to peep, it responds when I talk to it and it starts moving around but doesn't look like the beak has pushed out any further.
Thank you for responding. 🙂

Ducklings can take 72 hours to completely hatch, and they will go several hours where they don't seem to make any progress at all, so try not to fret. Eggs that have pipped on the wrong side can take longer to fully hatch but most are successful on their own. Just monitor and give him time. Keep us posted!

Thanks! I was mostly worried it wouldn't get enough air, since the beak isn't that far out. I couldn't find any articles that mentioned my exact concern, and I may have started to panic...just a wee bit 🤏
It is hard waiting though! I appreciate the response. Thank you! Hopefully I'll be able to post pics in a few days!

If it has externally pipped and is chirping it is getting all the air it needs.
