Hey all!
First off: the ducklings are just fine! They came out perfectly healthy with no defects or issues and have been doing great their first week.
... which is exactly why I'm posting!
We have a very broody hen who refused to break for an entire YEAR, no matter what we tried she kept finding new sneaky places to make nests, so we finally decided to let her have what she wanted so badly, and we let her sit on two duck eggs. We put the eggs under her on Thanksgiving morning, meaning they SHOULD have hatched around the 24th/25th. But, they pipped, zipped, AND hatched completely (yes, all in ONE DAY) on the 21st. The shells were clean, no veins or goop or yolk left behind. I've hatched a few batches of ducklings and have never seen such fast progress. I thought for sure they would be premature, or weak, or just have something wrong, but they're perfect! They're active and peeping and zooming around exploring things.
Does this happen on occasion, or do we have some sort of super mom on our hands?
(She's very happy to finally have babies, by the way. You can tell how "proud" she looks on her face!)
