Is it possible? I'm thinking about buying a few Chinese geese. They will be living with our Muscovy ducks. Will there be any problems? Also, how much does a goose's diet differ from a duck's?

Ducks and geese can't breed. Even if you cross a muscovy duck with a mallard based breed of duck the offspring will be sterile and called mules. So muscovy are different from other ducks.

I haven't owned geese, they scare me.

Thank you! I thought so. I just wondered if Muscovies crossed with geese could produce mules as well as Muscovies crossed with ducks.

Muscovy are ducks, they just aren't mallard based. They come from south America, and aren't related to other breeds of ducks. They are more closely related to geese than other duck breeds but are still considered ducks.

I've heard that there are duck-geese hybrids possible. Extremely unlikely, except for the mallard - Egyptian geese combination which is supposed to be genetically close enough to fertilize. I have yet to see such a hybrid though. I guess someone with more duck milage can offer you better answer.

I have a Embden gander who was hatched by a Muscovy duck [she didn't lay the egg] He lived with and mated with Muscovy's for 5 yrs before I brought a female goose home to him. Never did we have a cross between a goose and a duck.

Hope i can add to this thread, Can you house chinese geese with ducks? specifically muscovies? Are there needs the same? can they eat the same store bought feed? Is there anything ducks need that geese dont or vise versa? I want some so bad!
