Ducks can be shocked by electric fences

I was just getting all the birds out to their coop at Grandmas house and had taken one load out today. Everything was done except for lining the inside of the 2x4 welded wire fence with hardware cloth.

I want to have a fortress.

We have a net over the top, 3 strands of electric wire around the outside. It is all done except for the inner liner to protect against small animals that elude the electric wire and to keep anything from attempting to pull them out.

I stopped by grandmas to see if they put themselves to bed and they hadn't, rounded up the troops... missing one duck. Searched the fenced yard and found him pulsing with his head through the fence and resting on the electric wire.

He was bleeding from his ear. My boyfriend ran to turn it off. He took one last breath and that was it

I have always heard that chickens don't get shocked by electric fences because their feathers protect them. Well my male Campbell reached his head through and managed to get his head over the bottom wire while I was at work. And the shocking kept him stuck there.

So warning your feathered friends can get shocked.

I am so sorry about your duck. That is extremely sad!:|

I am also planning on putting up a electric fence around our duck pen. I was planning on keeping in unplugged during the day when they were out. I was going to have it so they can not get to it from the inside of the pen. I will have to think on this.
