Ducks confused about their identity

I had just one Rouen Adult Drake I thought, he had a green head. So he was the last of my ducks and he was lonely so I got him two Adult Rouen Drakes to
pale around with. It was great he loved them but then spring came and the two newer ducks thought they should have sex with my original duck. I noticed
because my original duck started limping so I was trying to find out why. So I kept him in a small cage for a week and he seemed well again. I put him
back in with his friends and they were on top of him again both at one time. Then my duck got on one of the new ducks and the other new duck got on
top of mine so I had a three duck pile. I am very confused, I had been told that if a Rouen had a green head it was a he. I have now moved in my duck with
my 3 chickens. Now my duck is doing something I did not think duck did, in the morning when I open the chicken house the duck is sitting on the roost. He
has done this three times. So is he a boy or a girl? Is he a chicken or a duck that like to roost:barnie:barnie:barnie Any thoughts would be appreciated. Terri

Pictures of the ducks would be very helpful! Sometimes, in a group of only male ducks, they need something to take their sex-drive out on. I'm sure someone can give better info than me, but perhaps you should keep them on a see-don't-touch social agenda until mating season is over. Good luck!

I will try and get some pics but they usually run or fly away. The group thing I did think about maybe its an age difference thing. I don't know how old the two newer one is. I will keep my original duck in with the chickens that way they can be on different sides of the fence and still see each other. Thank for the info.

I have two Rouen hens. Before my Mallard Drake was mature they used to be on top of each other constantly. Then after my Drake started mating them they left each other alone. I recently sold my Mallards and have only the two Rouens in the pen for now. They are back to trying to mate with each other again. It is just something Ducks seem to do as it is instinct to mate in the Spring. I think you have three males that wish they had some females but don't.

I agree with all the above, def a mating season thing! but also a dominance thing! My ducks do this to eachother and my drakes will do it to eachother too. think of it as establishing the pecking order.... there’s a punchline in there somewhere but I’ll refrain lest i get banned from BYC lol

Hi, well in the end only one boy was crowned as the girl for this season but now they seem
to be done with mating. I noticed the boy/girl has finally gotten feathers on his head.
So I will see next season if they pick a different boy/girl or if the have the same poor
duck. Hope your get done mating soon. Terri
