Okay, I am officially crazy, now.

My two Cayuga ducklings have let me know they have outgrown their brooder. They get out of it all the time. I open the bathroom door and there are these two black ducks standing there, looking at me as if to say, "What?"

I would put them in a dishpan full of warm water, in the shower stall (don't have a bathtub, only have the one bathroom, as a matter of fact, where I'm brooding 4 chicks and two ducklings in separate brooders) whilst I cleaned out their brooder. By the time I was done, and everything was all fresh in their brooder, they were ready to get out of the dishpan for a dry off and a quick snack back in the brooder. They'd rest, all tuckered out.

But the next time I'd come into the bathroom, they'd be out of the brooder. And they can't get back INTO it.

Soooooo..... last night I started their swim practice and just pulled the brooder out of the bathroom. The chicks are still okay in theirs, although they do roost on the edges of it. (One intrepid girl flapped her way to the toilet seat to fall asleep there.) I put towels down on the entire floor, set up a new feed station, and set up a new watering station I made out of a plastic Alhambra water bottle. Very clever, if I say so myself. I cut two holes out of the sides, on opposite sides of the bottle, about five inches above the bottom of the bottle. Good sized holes, so the ducklings - now pretty good sized ducks - could put their heads in and fiddle with the water, but not tip the thing over or get too much water flung about the bathroom. They liked it a lot, after they figured out where the actual holes were. (For a while, they kept bumping the bottle with their bills, "looking" for a way to get into the water. But then they finally found the holes.)

They can get into and out of their swimming (now just wading!) dishpan in the shower all by themselves. They still snuggle together under the sink where half of their brooder fit, originally. I can wash the towels and don't have to deal with sopping pine shavings any more.

This weekend, I guess I'll put 'em outdoors - which means I HAVE to complete their duck house pronto!

I ordered 10 cayugas but they are still under a heat lamp they are 11 days old.I already got them a small swimming pool ready but it will have to warm up first .I got a huge pond for when they grow up.

Sounds like a great set-up. Our ducklings always get to swim in the bathtub once a day -- sometimes more on the weekends. They have such a great time.

LOL, glad I'm not the first to consider this, as I have yet to finish any outdoor shelter for mine either and they are getting big! They like the bath room, they could just have it. LOL. Not quite there yet, but maybe by tomarrow.....

Probably a little different set up than yours, but I've brooded ducklings and goslings in my bathroom for the last two years, and it's the perfect set up!

We have a spare bathroom with a tub, that also has a hand sprayer and a grab bar. The bottom of the tub is textured non-slip, so I don't need to use bedding. I just plug a heat lamp in and clip it to the grab bar, and put a feeder at one end of the tub, and the waterer by the drain end. Twice a day, I unplug the lamp, take the feeder out, rinse and refill the waterer, and take the sprayer and spray down the sides and the bottom of the tub, with the ducklings still in it. It takes all of about 5 minutes, they LOVE it, and everything stays as clean and non-smelly as possible.

I highly recommend ducks in the bathroom!

Yep Im crazy too.. Last winter I had a fellow bycer give me 4 adult Pekin Ducks.. well by the time I got back to my home it was too late to bring them to the farm .. So I had 4 20 lb Pekins in an apartment, in my bathtub overnight and half the next day.... You should have seen the neighbors faces...

I WISH I had an extra bathroom!!!

lol.... I love it.... I don't feel like a wierdo anymore. I have chicks and ducklings in my bathroom too. I've had chicks in there all winter. I do the bathtub brooder thing as well. It's great, just rinse the mess down the drain daily and you've got it made.....lol

My adopted duckling "Skittles" was introduced to my bathroom sink. We only have one of those walk in shower things.
I filled the sink part way with luke warm water and put him in it. He was about 3 weeks at the time. He stood there with astonishment in his eyes and then started to flap and dip like a pro. Real fun to watch and took three bath towels to clean up!
