Ducks think pellet bedding is food.

I can’t my ducks and chickens are literally trying to eat wood pellet bedding.

I wondered about that... does it speak more to their taste or the taste of their food? We work at a pellet mill frequently, those do not taste good, i can tell you from experience, then again I don’t think diet and mud do either.
on a more serious note those pellets can expand several times their size and are extremely absorbent, they are a target of 5%moisture and are bound together by extreme pressure. I would possibly be concerned if the ducks had ingested too many. Unlike their food pellets they may not process them well.

I don't think poultry have much of a sense of taste, I think it's more of a "this is the same shape of what I'm fed, so this is also probably what I'm being fed" xD

Is it possible to put wood shavings over the pellets so they can't eat them?

Anything like mine and they would forage for them. I wouldn’t think they would be ideal, they aren’t immediately absorbent like shavings are, it takes a while but man when they do.. they are like those little tablets that grew into dinosaurs in a glass of water. Was always a great treat to watch, them you got a slimy dinosaur to play with that withered up and stained your pillow when you fell asleep with it!

I put pellets underneath plenty of shavings to discourage pellet eating.

When i use pellets i mist them. Gets rid of any sharp edges. Never had a problem with eating them.
