I was going to start in the business of eggs soon with a couple I chickens, and I am very new at this whole thing so I was wondering what the difference between ducks and chickens were? Are some of the male ducks mean like roosters? What month do they not hatch eggs? Or do they all year-round? Are ducks any nicer? If so what breed? (Ect.)

In its heyday the Indian Runner was the ultimate egg machine, with laying records that greatly exceeded those of any hen. An official world record of 363 eggs. Ducks are messier and a little harder to raise and handle.

If that is the world record for ducks, then chickens win.

"The World Record for chicken laying was set in 1979 by a White Leghorn who laid 371 eggs in 364 days."

Ducks are messy. They need at least a little water, like a wading pool. If you have a pond it would probably be easier.

Would people in your area buy duck eggs?

If you use chickens, you might want to find out what color of eggs people in your area prefer.

For white eggs you probably want White Leghorns and for brown eggs you probably want a Rhode Island Red or a sex-link hybrid.
