Hi I need some ideas on how to stop ducks making a mess with their water please

Somewhere on BYC I saw a set up where someone laid down small stones around water tubs and this seemed to keep the mud down to a dull roar.

how old are your ducks what kind of housing/coop/run/yard or pen are they in? What kind of containers are you using for their water? Do they have pools to swim in? Is that where the mess is? Do you keep water inside their coop?
