We have ducks that I purchased that live in a pen and run and get locked up at night. We also have a solitary duck that belonged to old neighbors who is determined to free-range because he was never penned up. He was not solitary until today. I went out this morning and his buddy was killed during the night. We lost another of his buddies earlier this week (whatever got her took her away completely, unlike this boy, who was left in the middle of the yard). So, I'm going to keep trying to get him to go into the pen - but I can't chase him over 2 acres and a pond to do so. He comes up when I go feed the others and will spend the day hanging out by the pen, but as soon as I approach to coax him inside, he runs off. I've tried luring him in with duck food, as well as blueberries (his favorite), but he refuses. I know ducks do not like to be solitary animals, but I am at a loss for how to handle him. I don't want to go out and buy more free-range ducks - two years ago there were 9, but coyotes, racoons, and roaming dogs decimated the flock. Any tips for luring him in, other than keep trying what I've been doing? (There are 10 lovely ladies in the pen, so he would have a good life in there.)
