I just had to share this!
Last Sunday (the 19th) my one runner duck was killed by a dog leaving her friend all alone. The remaining duck was so sad. She would quack loudly all day long like she was calling for her lost friend.
I contacted a friend who is on BYC to see if she had any ducks for sale. I purchased a black swedish female call duck to be a companion for my duck.
I brought her home last Wednesday. She was only here for a few hours when my boy friend came home from work. I was anxious to show her to him, so I got her out of the duck house. (She was hiding.)
All was well till she kinda flipped out as birds do, and she got away from me.
I was worried about getting her back into the pen since she was so new, but she was following my other duck around so I thought maybe I wouldn't have to worry.
That was until my rooster decided that he didn't like the new duck drinking from the water in his run and he attacked her. Nothing serious, but enough to give her a good scare.
While I was chasing him back into the coop, she took off.
Long story short she was GONE. She went back behind my neighbor's house. We tried to catch her, but she went into the woods and it was getting dark. She vanished.
We figured that was it. She was gone and we were never going to see her again.
Then this evening my sister was returning from dropping her daughter's friend off at home when she was a little black duck crossing the road.
She hadn't even had a chance to see the duck when I brought her home, but she knew that was my little call duck. So she pulled into a driveway and after much effort, her and her daughter were able to catch her!
We were sitting outside with the birds when my sister pulls up in front of my house. She's carrying something black, but I couldn't see what it was. Then she asks, "look familiar?"
I couldn't believe it!!! It was totally meant to be!
My sister lives down the street from me, and has to pass my house to leave the neighborhood. My boyfriend was getting changed after dinner and said your sister is on the corner. I went out to see what was up. She was waiting to make sure her younger daughter got home before leaving the neighborhood. We ended up talking for a few minutes.
If that hadn't happened she wouldn't have been in the right place at the right time to see my little duck crossing the street.
We are so relieved to have her home.
