Hey everyone! Just a quick question about bird dander. Currently I am keeping 4 button quail in my bedroom cage. They have been leaving a film of dust on everything surrounding the cage...I was reading up on this and found that it can be almost deadly to humans? I clean the cage religiously every week, but am I hurting myself with these little guys in the house? I'm a severe hypochondriac, so this is scaring me quite a bit. O.O

I would agree, I'd keep them outside. I'd never think about entering our pens without wearing a mask, but we're dealing with quail in the thousands, even still, I'd keep them outside. It must be murder on your sinuses!

I buy dust masks by the case. I only use them when catching birds or mucking out coops.

One of the maladies is called henworkers lung. I can't remember the others off the top of my head.

Honestly, a few button quail would be just like keeping a cockatiel in your bedroom. They create a lot of dander too. And don't even get me started on Cockatoos - they are much, much worse! Many people keep many different pet birds in their homes and never have a problem. Some people even have house chickens. It's up to you whether you take the risk. Remember some of the dust will be coming from their bedding as they flap and scratch around, and as you scoop bedding out to change it, which can also cause allergies for some people. But a bedroom probably isn't the ideal place for birds, especially if it isn't well ventilated.
