mrb, from your pics it looks like more than just lice. Yes, it is probably damage from the rooster and yes, it could be the beginning of her moult, as witnessed by feathers laying around in the coop/run more than usual. Have you actually checked them for lice, or is it an assumption? To check for lice/mites, pick a couple hens off the roost at night and look under the tails and around the vents with a good flashlight. If they have them, you should be able to see them scurrying for cover. As far as using chemicals on your birds, Sevin Dust, Adams Flea and Tick Dip, and Ivermectin are proven safe for poultry. Ivermectin is strong stuff and most folks don`t eat the eggs for a couple weeks after treatment. It also kills most internal parasites. So, the only thing you can actually treat for is lice/mites and you have to determine if that is the problem. If you think other birds are picking feathers, Noxema Face Cream will change their appetite for feathers.
