dusting boxes

It's not "exact" by any means, but I just sprinkle it wherever I think they'll scratch and get it on themselves. I would just put enough to barely cover the dirt, then mix it around a bit...so when they scratch they don't raise a lot of it in dust form. For instance, the cage our 6 are housed in till the coop's done is about 4' x 5'...and I sprinkled maybe 2 tablespoons onto their bedding, then stirred it around just a tad.

This might help https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/626353/dust-boxes/10 mine have a spot under the coop that is ONE of their favorite spots to dust bathe.....we have sandy soil here so I just dump some DE in their favorite areas now and then. I rarely gets wet there unless we are having a monsoon and it dries up quite fast. Mine just look at me like I've lost my mind when I try to give them a real designated box to bathe in.

I know I've seen it somewhere, but what does de stand for again?
