Dusty Coop

I clean out my caged chicks out daily and its definately not powdered poop, its more like dander and fine feather dustings. Nasty stuff and not good for you to breathe in tho. Wear masks when you clean out their cages or surroundings.

I don't know if this is a good idea or not, so take it with a grain of salt. I've read posts about what to do in temps of 100 degrees F and above. One suggestion was misting. I'm wondering if a fine mist of water would help, especially just before a thorough cleaning. Seems like if it's acceptable in high temperatures, it should not make it too wet even in the coop at normal temps. Any reason that wouldn't be a good idea, anybody?

Didn't you know that dust is a major byproduct of chickens? It is a worldwide industry and there are chicken farms that supply all the dust for the entire earth!

The area around the brooders in the lobby at work gets a coating of dust that we have to keep cleaning up everyday or the boss swears we haven't touched it for a month.

I have tons of dust too! I have to dust off my heat lamp now and then or the dust gives off a burned smell. I would imagine it could be a real fire hazard.
Just a side note, some respiratory meds have been made of chicken feathers- Mucomist sp? is one. I used to be a respiratory tech, and we always had to ask if the patient was allergic to chickens and/or eggs.

I had heard about resp. problems caused by chickens. At my last dr visit for Bronchitis, I mentioned that I had chickens to him and if that was a concern. I had pneumonia pretty bad last year and wondered if I was weaken now and easily aggrevated by the chicken dust. He looked at me really oddly and said that anything like that is rare and not to worry. Ok...
