So in a few months our chickens will be heading to their Summer home at the cottage. My plan is to take my already made coop up there and use that and build a new coop here at my house. Anyway we have an Eagle's nest not far from our cottage (next fire rd. over). I'm hoping they might leave once the summer population shows up. But is there anything I can do to deter the Eagles from wanting to swipe one of my birds. Most of the birds will be larger with the smallest over 10 weeks. I was thinking of PVC high tunnel over a long run with netting over top is that really my only option? I would like to free range them for some of the day to keep down our tick population. I already took care of our local fox but the Eagles have me a little concerned. The flock will be closed up in the coop at night but during the day is my biggest concern.

We have a 1&1/2 acre for them to free range along with one other property that just gets mowed that is 1 acre as well. Currently we have 40 acres but they only like to free range the area around the house. (approx. 3 acres).

We are going to be moving at the end of the year and the house we're moving to has an eagle or two that like to perch in a big pine...directly across the road from where my coop will be. I've been thinking of safe options for letting my small flock out.....I haven't been able to come up with a free range alternative that's safe.

I think the route we'll go is a mobile chicken tractor, that way we can cover a good chunk of the yard but they stay protected.

Where are you located. Some species are far more likely to go after chickens than are even Golden Eagles. Can you show a picture of the actual eagles in question. Lots of eagles have proven to be hawks, and falcons have proven to be smaller hawks.

I keep forgetting to look at where people are from. Golden's shouldn't be an issue where you are, but I agree, put up some pictures. It might even be an osprey, in which case you really don't have to worry.

That's why I specified land predators ;) I don't doubt they would take a duck off the water. That must have been something to see!
Went out to my coop yesterday mid morning to check on my girls.....guess who was up in a near by tree?
Needless to say, they stayed in the run yesterday! :)
