Or did my big fat hen smash another egg? I was doing my last inspection of the eggs before they hatch while Momma was refreashing herself and found this one. They are due to hatch this weekend. I'm pretty sure the chick is still alive because I thought I saw something move... but then I freaked out and put it back real quick. Now as I type this I'm wondering if I put it back in the right position...

I had two eggs that cracked before they were ready to hatch... The first one I was uneducated and thought the chick was dead, turns out the chick was alive -- don't make that mistake! The second cracked egg is doing fine, it hatched perfectly :). To bad that one is a boy!!!

You can put elmers glue on it, but that is a huge crack so I'm not sure if that would work... hopefully someone else can answer.

Elmers Glue is probably a no, the crack is huge. When I peaked under the hen when I went to put them to bed some of the shell is missing now. They are due to hatch in a few days so I guess I will just leave it alone. These eggs were free so if they survive, they survive. It is a trial run for me and the hens so any success is good. I think 7 or 8 if this egg makes it out of 12 will make it to hatch day. I guess thats pretty good for first timers.

Yeah, Actually the chick with the crack who is alive now, I didn't put glue on it since it was so close to hatching, didn't want to disturb them... hopefully everything goes well! Goodluck!

So I looked back at my calendar and we are on day 19 today. The egg is now smashed all on one side. I candled it this morning and the air cell is good, and the chick seemed pretty active, moving around. Didn't hear anything though. The hole in the membrane looks like it "healed" or closed up. I just hope my big fat Copper Marans hen won't damage it further. I sure hope this chick makes it. I hate it when babies don't make it.

What position should the egg be in to get the best hatching results? I know my hen keeps moving them but when I check on her I want to make sure the egg is in the proper position.

Not sure about the position, but I didn't hear any sounds until day 20, and that was for 4/6 of the eggs that made it. I thought I was crazy when I heard it peeping, and I brought my dad and brother out to hear and not a sound. They thought I was hearing things... but it finally chirped when I called them out again!
