Early Hatching?

If an egg is accidently cracked a few days early than its supposed to hatch, can a chick survive? And also can they hatch on their own early?

I had this happen to me, dropped one while candling it.

A fellow BYC'er gave me the advice of dipping it in melted candle wax to seal the crack. The chick hatched just fine. I was told it depends on how deep the crack is and to watch and make sure the chick can get out of the shell through the wax once it starts hatching.
