We have recently begun to wonder if one of our Easter Egger hens is a Rooster. It has been making noises as though it wants to crow. My daughter asked her friend for an opinion and was told from pictures that it was a rooster. So we have been deciding if we keep it or re-home it. Yesterday we got our first egg so we want to know if we need to find it a new home.

This chicken is 4 months old. It is also very good at escaping the run as I need to get proper poultry netting above. So today my daughter put the bird in question in the coop while we went to tractor supply to make sure it was safe. Since finding the egg yesterday she checked this morning and didn't find any but when she went to put the girls up for the night she found another egg and the only bird in the coop was the one we were told was a rooster so we aren't sure if she missed one or if the supposed rooster is really a hen. I figured it was time to ask the community.

This bird is female. Probably close to laying age.😊
The egg could very well have come from her

Thanks for the input. We're stumped because it's trying to crow too. We are learning that hens will do that in the absence of a male.
My 2 1/2 year-old Polish hen crows! We have a rooster, but once in a while she’ll join him in the morning. It’s very random and maybe couple times a month at most. Shoots out her wings and neck just like a rooster. Sounds like a weird goat scream.🤣

It's a pullet and probably laid those first two eggs, judging by the size and redness of her comb. Female chickens can indeed crow, although it isn't too common. I doubt she will ever get as loud as a rooster, but if it becomes a problem for the neighbors it may be best to find a new home for her.
Our neighbors have roosters. We're in a chicken friendly neighborhood.
