I haven't put my chicks (about 6 weeks old) out permately yet because I haven't gotten the coop built yet. I want it secure from snakes. But they do get to go to the run every day. The run is a 8' x 10' X 10' chain link dog pen with 1/4" plastic hardware running around base 3 feet up (to keep their little heads inside and to keep the dog's paws out and a shade cloth roof. It's getting past frustraiting taking them in an out every day as the X's are really getting big. We've got 4 Xs and 6 layers. It hard to believe that 5 weeks ago I put all 10 of them in a bucket to take them out for sunshine. Now it takes 3 trips in a much larger tote box to complete the job. This morning though those trips were justified - just as i got them all into the run I looked up and ............

granted he wouldn't have been able to swallow them but that doesn't mean he wouldn't have tried at least on the layers.

If I saw one of those near my house, I think I'd have moved out LONG ago!
Worst we've got here are garter snakes. Like those.
But the skeeters can lift you off your feet this early wet spring season...

Glad you've taken the precautions....you're justified!

Rat snakes are VERY common here. Every time my egg production drops, I look for the rat snake, and usually find it.
