Eating Dogfood ?

I think that the "give and take" of a forum discussion can often outweigh the use of the "search feature". The posters (particularly the first poster) can interject pertinent questions relative to their particular situation rather than what may be found using the "search function".

Each method has its place and its time.

CLOSER to the SUBJECT, I once took my young children to a "trout-fishing CAMP" near a lake in Colorado. It was privately owned and operated and my children were SURE to catch fish. I paid "per-pound" of fish caught whether released or kept.

My "kids" caught a LOT of fish and had a GREAT TIME (cost like the DEVIL !!!) We kept the fish and cooked some that evening.

TASTELESS TROUT !!!

They were fed dogfood. The meat was a pale white.

I was used to the "wild trout" with pink meat found in high mountain lakes and streams. Almost as tasty as Salmon!

We ARE what we EAT!

It will not hurt the Chickens to eat the dog food.
I'll assume they are eating their food and anything else they can find.
So they are getting everything they need Nutritionally.

My duck likes to tease my dog and steel his food ...lol

As long as a pet is receiving what they need in their food, and not a whole lot of fillers and scraps. They do not tend to over eat!

Holly-O

Your THEORY is GOOD, but it's obvious that you do not have BOXER Dogs.

Allowed to, they will eat-eat-eat-eat....in a manner that would SHAME a Cornish X Commercial Broiler!

I've never owned a Boxer. But I have owned many. And as you said ... it's not in all cases. *wink*
I have found that a lot of the over weight dogs I've met. The owners are the ones to blame. And usually due to the Bad foods for them! I've actually saw someone let their dog lick BUTTER! and Buy them Ice cream on a regular basis. Not dog food Ice cream neither. (which you can buy) yeesh ...lol

and there leads to another whole topic. Most supermarket sold dog foods are horrible for dogs.they are grain and fillers so they are actually probabley better for chickens than dogs as someone previously stated.Good table scraps are great for dogs.Butter and ice cream won't hurt them either. But a fat dog is not good.

I have the opposite problem... Our dogs and goats always try to eat anything they see someone else eating. They will eat chicken feed, wild bird food, horse feed, goat feed, rabbit food, cat food, dog food, ferret food... you name it! Feeding time includes "defending" the bowls and buckets until we're sure the food gets eaten by the proper recipients. That includes occasionally chasing naughty dogs or goats out of the chicken coop and run, when they follow us in to collect the eggs.

Oh, and our dogs have finally realized that eggs taste good; so we have to be careful not to leave the egg basket within their reach! Last week, two of the three eggs we had collected one morning mysteriously disappeared, before we could put them away. I guess we should've been more careful about letting the dogs eat hard-boiled eggs, since they still "look" like a raw egg. I think it's only the large, lab-mix that took the eggs, but she might have shared her plunder with the two little, Jack-Chi sisters. Since then, we bring the egg basket in the pen with us, as we check the farther nest boxes.

I had to laugh at Holly O's post about the dog eating ice cream!!!

My FIRST Boxer (when I was a boy... more than 1/2 Century ago) had 2 VERY FAVORITE "treats" that he enjoyed often, although not generally at the same time: Popcorn and Ice Cream!

He would cram his head inside the JUMBO box of popcorn from the movie theatre and walk around "blind" eating popcorn!

We couldn't stop at the "Dairy Queen" without buying him a vanilla ice cream cone!

At Christmas, he always got a box of movie theater popcorn under the Christmas Tree with the other presents. He wouldn't open it himself, but would bring it to one of us to open when we opened presents!

Ha-Ha! He was a smart dog!

Believe it or not, he once "charged" 2 pounds of hamburger at the local Supermarket. He brought it home "wrapped" with a "charge ticket" attached to the package.

(None of my dogs have ever been "fat". They get a lot of exercise.)
(But, they surely can EAT!)

To funny!

I love all my pets and treat them at times ...lol
It's why we all have them. Their antics are to entertain us and amuse.
All are to work some sort of job as well.

I LOVE YOU GUYS!
We are just a bunch of crazy animal lovers!
