I was told by a man who has a lot of chickens that I should not give my chickens any fruit because it will stop them from laying but in my dummy book it doesn't say that - so where is the truth??

I don't think that effects their egg laying mine eat all the food rests and they love it and it never effects their egg production ;)

Even though fruit doesn't affect laying, some fruit affects egg flavor for sure... feed your hens a ton of berries and try the eggs the next day

Well, like everything can effect egg taste, right? And color of yolk? My Chickie Darlings eat just everything... from yogurt and cereal to table scraps like pasta and meat and veggie scraps with a piece of birthday cake or the rest of an ice cream cone I am done with and meal worms and crickets............... Imagine if they just ate bagged feed!

Yes, I'm curious what the final answer is to this question as well! This time of year we eat a ton of fruit and I'd love to be able to feed the skins and slightly over-ripe pieces to our chickens rather than put it in the compost bin for the city's benefit, LOL. But not if it decreases their laying or makes the eggs taste funny. What does fruit make the eggs taste like?

In my experience I had never had an egg taste funny after the chickens ate fruit.

But I have noticed egg production slows down when they consume a large amount of fruit.
Especially melons. I still give them fruit for nutritional reasons but I do try to limit how much per day.

That's interesting, I tend to feed a lot of melon in the summer to keep them cool and haven't noticed any egg drop off yet.

And last time I fed leftover berry pie to the hens and the eggs the next morning tasted very sweet
