Eating rigid foam insulation...styrofoam

We have a piece of foam insulation/styrofoam hidden in the back behind the dog house and I caught the adults (eight months old) eating it. Will they be ok? Is it toxic? Should I remove it?

We made the mistake of putting foam insulation on the inside wall of the chicken tractor.


Our chickens got bored with their daily rations of layer feed and the occasional scratch, and decided to dine on their insulation.


They ate quite a bit of it before we discovered what they were up to.


They are still alive and doing well. So I guess it can't be too bad.


BTW, we have since covered the foam insulation with a thin sheet of plywood. And we learned our lesson -- don't leave styrofoam or foam insulation any place that chickens can get to.

My chickens have pecked at foam insulation on and off for a year and a half. Every time we cover some up, they find more in the barn. The latest piece to have peck holes is by the hay rack. Everyone is fine. No problems. Probably not the best for them to eat, but we've never had an issue and everyone is healthy.

Maybe the chickens are trying to make the egg cartons themselves!!
