Like any living creature, chickens can carry a variety of pests and parasites, internal and external.
The best prevention is to keep your flock as healthy as possible, making sure that your housing, food and water are all clean. If you live in a warm area you may have year-round problems with external parasites and may need to dust your birds; I live where it is cold so I've never had to treat my girls for anything. The dust baths they take in the summer seem to take care of any problems. If you are worried about internal parasites you can always have regular fecal tests done to set your mind at ease.
The most important thing to remember with kids is to have them wash their hands after they handle the birds or clean the coop. However, don't worry too much about it, either. Many recent studies have proven that country kids who grow up surrounded by animals and outdoor living are much healthier than their city counterparts. A little dirt is good for ya!
