And the chickens I'm showing are:

Three Sussex Hens as a group - Layers
Three Lavender Ameraucana chicks as Dual Purpose Meat Birds

TWO ____ see below:

I have the hardest choices ever, which TWO exhibition birds will I show, this is the max I can show at this fair in that category. But I have SQ many show quality looking birds right now.

From the list provided above of my chickens which ones would you fancy to see at a chicken show? All of the ones with YES after them are prepared to be shown as far as looking good.

Here's the great thing about this show

- its acceptable to show non recognized colorations and patterns due to the wording of the rules. The layers class only calls for, and nothing specific, "three hens of the same breed will be judged as a single set in the layers class" so I can show off my beautiful coronation hen (woot)!

Its also not specific to whether they are judging on the best layer but states on the trio with the best conformation and ability. So my 10+lb hens shouldn't have a problem placing against the 4-5lb layers and pullets that other exhibitors will bring.

I am totally aware that my sussex are horrible layers and are 2+yrs old but this is judge on ability and conformation so my trio will have the most leg width and the widest hip and at one point in their life I'm sure they were some of the best layers you could have. I also don't raise for eggs - I just keep for pets and to show them.

i would use the one of the silkies and the bantam rosecomb...i'm currently trying to get my birds ready for the kiddos to show in 2 months (need to be ready by September 28th)

The breed is recognized, but the variety is not.

It is a common misperception that unrecognized breeds and varieties cannot be entered at APA/ABA sanctioned shows. In fact, any breed or variety can be entered in any show, even mixed breeds, mongrels with breed names that are just made up, as is often the case, and legitmate breeds which have not been recognized. I have not heard of a show yet who will not accept your entry fee and have a judge look at the bird and mark the card. What many people do not seem to understand is that this is all that happens. It is an excercise in futility in most cases to enter these birds. Some people like to fool themselves into believing that they have a "show winner", simply because they enter a bird of an unrecognized variety, or one with a made up name, and receive a first "prize" placing by default, having no competition. Basically they are buying their ribbon. It is not earned. The qualifications of the judge also need to be taken into account. Is this an APA/ABA licensed judge who for the most part knows what he's doing, or simply a kindly old timer or extension office personnel who has an interest in poultry, but really knows very little about the Standards or about proper confirmation in how it relates to laying or meat producing ability? Many fairs are "judged" by unqualified people. The concept behind exhibiting and competition as a way of displaying the breeder's skill is lost on a lot of people. Time and consistency in repeating the wins is what means anything. It's fine for children to get their jollies by "winning" a ribbon just for showing up with a bird, but I don't understand how practical adults get any sense of accomplishment out of that.

Narragansett: I really love what I do and its something I'd like to do for the rest of my life. I plan on being an ABA/APA registered judge as a hobby and something like a poultry geneticist as my career, which I'm well on the way to. Whether you approve of my opinion of my exhibition birds is up to you, there will be no hard feelings. I like this show because I know I have the upper hand because my Sussex are from high quality stock and really confine with the rules, so in that since a little gitty-ness isn't a bad thing.

I've been thinking a silkies, which one? (Salt and Pepper - cockerel or Pepper and Pumpkin - pullet)

i really like the partridge but you might see more of them and i would like to see the bottom as i dont see that color that often
