Hi everyone. Not sure if I am posting in the right section, but while i was washing up this morning and watching the chickens, I noticed my hen Penny's vent was swollen and bleeding.

I ran outside immediately and her vent was in such a mess! At first, i thought maybe a fox had been at her, but I called my 'Hen Guy' friend and he came rushing over and told me she is egg bound. He would have to remove it himself.

So he massaged the egg out and boy it was HUGE! I don't think she would have survived. She has perked up now and is eating and drinking and I have separated her from the others because they kept pecking her butt.

Now, what I want to know is, is that she still looks swollen 'down there' and am tempted to clean it up or should I leave well alone now?

Pics of egg attached...
Many thanks in advance
Kim

Now that's a big egg. I'm sorry I can't help you with your question but it's a good thing you had someone to help you get the egg out.

I would suggest if the swelling doesn't shrink after a few hours. Massage some hemorrhoidal ointment. It will protect irrated tissue, shrink swollen tissue. Just use your finger to massage on the outside. Make sure it is massaged in well. You don't want your girl injesting the ointment.

I washed the area well and applied haemorrhoid cream then left her in a dark room with food and water over night so she could rest and recover. I have checked on her this morning and she seems in good spirits and just want to get back with the others. Her bum is still a bit swollen. I found an egg in with her there too! Should I keep her in the dark so she doesn't lay any more eggs and how long should i do this for?

Will she get picked on when I put her back in with the other ladies?

I would probably keep her in until she is all better. Is there a friend you could put in with her that wouldnt peck at her?

I wonder what makes them get egg bound and produce such large eggs? Im scared of the whole egg bound thing. My girls are only 10 weeks old so this will all be so new to me.

Hopefully someone with more chicken experience will come along and fill us both in.
