Egg Bound Hen ***UPDATE POST 30***

I have been feeding her Layena pellets but recently they stopped eating the pellets andi went back to the crumble. I feed them kitchen scraps, cooked eggs, etc. She has oyster shell mixed in with the crumble.

I'm going to look into supplimenting her to prevent this from happening. I don't think it was caused by lack of nutrition tho. I figured everything was okay in the coop because I have a few new layers and there hasn't been any shell issues or anything to make me think something was wrong.

I am going to keep her on the porch until she is feeling much better. Our porch is rather dark. I can open the door and allow her sunlight daily until she's feeling better. She's welcome not to lay as long as she needs to.

One thing I noticed that may or may not make a difference...I have seen it recommended a number of times to put oyster shell out separately so that each can take what they need, rather than mixing it with the food. Some may need more than others.

Yay Chicks! :

I've found that to work best. Some of my hens only eat a little and then every once in awhile they just scarf it down--seems like they know when they need more/less.

I am glad to hear you girl is doing ok. I was worried today while i was out with mine about how yours was doing.

Thank you everyone! I'm glad I had someplace to ask for help at.

I will put a dish of oyster shell in each coop seperately.

Good, about offering oyster shell free choice 24/7 separate from other food.

Hope your girl continues to improve. Thanks for caring so much

She's doing good. She is up and moving around in the crate. I'm feeding her eggs, tums in her water, oyster shell and layer crumble and a piece of pumpkin. She got excited about seeing the feed shovel this morning. I am going to clean her crate today and try to clean up her rear end some. I think I will bath her in the sink. I'm glad she is looking so much better. She went from almost dead and sprawled out on her side breathing hard to standing on one foot scratching her head. I couldn't be happier!

I thought I would take a minute to update. She laid an egg for the first time. Its hard shelled and perfect. A bit lighter than I hoped it would be (she's a cuckoo marans).
