One of the BR hens got sick yesterday. I assumed she was overheated because it's so hot here. I put a fan on her to cool her off, but during the night she passed what appeared to be egg yolk. I'm thinking a rubber egg broke inside her. We cleaned her up and emptied more yolk from her. Soaked her in warm water.
How long before she perks back up? What else should I be doing for her?

Do you have a vet that sees birds? Yellow, yolky droppings can be an indication of egg yolk peritonitis. I'm attaching several links to information to help you determine if that is what might be going on. If it's EYP then she will need antibiotic treatment. Birds that lay soft shelled, thin shelled or shell less eggs are more at risk for this, and some birds lay internally which will cause this. It can recur as the underlying condition causing the laying issues will remain. Unfortunately this is not uncommon in laying hens.

These are very interesting, and informative. Sure as heck never heard of it before, so was a great read. Very possibly happened at least once to one of mine. Everything described, she did, except I don't know if just an egg yolk was laid, didn't see that. but swollen abdomen, lethargy, then breathing labored, etc happened and then died. I called some vets to have her checked or could tell me anything, they said, we don't do chickens. Thank you for posting those links. Much appreciated.

Thank you for the responses. Other than labored breathing, she exhibits all the signs described in those articles. I don't know of any local vet who treats chickens, and there is no way that was going to happen even if there was one. We have a flock of over 60. We treat them the best we can but can't afford chicken doctor bills.
We will keep her as comfortable as possible and hope she comes around.

My last bird with EYP I treated with Amoxicillin orally. She is currently doing well, however I know she will likely have issues again, I suspect she's laying internally. I'm not a vet and the nearest one to me that sees birds is 100 miles away, so this is just what I do. Dosage I used was 125mg twice a day for 5 days. I use this: http://www.fishmoxfishflex.com/index.php/fish-mox-amoxicillin-60-count.html I divide the 250mg capsule into 2 treatments, mix each with about 2.5ml water with a bit of sugar just before dosing and give with an oral syringe. Here is a medication chart, says you can give up to 300 mg a day: https://sites.google.com/a/poultrypedia.com/poultrypedia/medicine-chart
Maybe someone else who has treated for this will have more info or different medication recommendation.
