Hello all,
I have Light Brahmas (two hens and one rooster) and would love to add a Black Jersey Giant hen for fun. Would I be able to tell their eggs apart? I would like to be able to collect and incubate the eggs from the Brahmas for purebred Brahmas, which I can only do if I can tell them apart.
What do you guys think?

I'd say ya. I know that BJG lay dark brown, and what color do your brahmas lay? Our's lay speckled, but it varies, soo, it can be hard. Shes not purebred tho. It also depends where you get your hen, she could lay light brown or dark brown depending on genetics. Unless of course you order from a hatchery.

Maybe calling them purebred is incorrect unless they come from a breeder?
Yes, we got them from a tractor supply store. They had a "rare breed special" one week, which just happened to be the week we got them. They look just like the pictures of purebred Brahmas I have found on the internet. Lovely chickens!

I have a BLUE jersey giant and she lays light brown, medium to large eggs. I don't know if the egg color changes between the black/blue/white giants, but hers have never been dark brown. Sometimes they're speckled with a little white, but most of the time they're a pretty solid light brown. These are her eggs, she is a very steady layer, 1 a day. But like I said, I don't know if they change color between the black/blue/white. Hope that helps.

Well they may be purebred but I was imagining show quaility.

Cool :)

I have no idea if they are show quality or not sadly. We raise Morgan horses so I can tell for those, but as far as chickens go I have no idea! I read the standard for the Brahma and just came away with my eyes crossed :p.
I wanted to show these but after coming back from a poultry swap with what turned out to be sick chickens and having to cull them I feel burned on the idea :(.
bluegiantsc I love the photo! Thank you! The visual is very nice, and I always love an excuse to see photos of people's eggs :D. I had not seen eggs from a giant before so those are fun.
Can't wait until mine start laying!
