I have found out recently that 2 chickens will use a nesting box at once. I have buffs and rhode island reds. I've seen this twice now. The buff will be in the box sitting then a red will work her way into the same box.... the red will jump out a bit later having "laid" her egg.. Did she just egg drop on my buff? And why 2 birds in a box?

Very common with my silkies. Same goes when one goes broody on a batch of eggs, suddenly, one decides they'll be broody too and sit on them with her.

I don't know the reasoning when there are other nests available they all use. Maybe they just like company.

I consider that normal. My nests are 16" x 16" x 16". It's fairly common to find 3 hens in one nest laying eggs together while my other three identical nests are empty.

I don't know why they do that. I've read different theories on here but I'm not a chicken. I don't think the same way they do.
