Our dog is interested, but can't get to them. He's tried sniffing them out and trying to dig out their holes, but the holes must be too deep. If he makes the holes any bigger the foundation of the coop could collapse. It is set a top cinderblocks.

Take him out at night when the rats are out and about, rats are smart but rather slow. My girls have the same problem, I need to get a couple of Jack Russells to help them out.

Is there a way we could possible smoke them out? Or fumigate the holes?

They do make smoke bomb things for groundhogs and gophers. I've never tired them so I have no clue. You'd probably have to move the chickens out in order to use one.
I have seen where some people flood the holes with a hose to drown them and/or force them to the surface.

Drowning them out sounds perfect. We will try that. We'll have our dog next to us to maybe catch them if they try to escape

This is what I found in the nesting box today! Now I'm not so sure if it's rats? Does this look like rat poop? I thought it looks a little long and mushy to be rat poop. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Looks too large to be rats? I do not live in the US, so I have no idea what else it could be. The consistency looks like rat, but the scale looks wrong.

If you do have a rat problem (the tunnels to me suggest rat), then go to youtube and search for rat bucket trap. Fairly easy to make, but needs a 20L (4-5 gallon?) bucket.

They really do work (I have a smaller one for mice, they commit suicide in there all the time). I won't use poisons at all.
