So I have been finding a lot of my eggs broken and I have even caught a few chickens eat broken eggs in the act. I have heard that you can put dye in the eggs to try and catch the chickens who are doing it. So I was wondering if this technic works or are there any other good ways to catch them.

You can poke a small hole in each end of a few eggs and blow out the contents then fill the eggs with mustard and put them in the nest boxes. You could also convert to a roll out nest box.

What do the remaining shells look like...thin and weak, maybe soft?

There's several reason chickens eat eggs....gotta figure out why first.
What all and how exactly are you feeding?

How old are you birds and how long have they been laying??
How many birds in how much coop and run space(in feet by feet)??
Dimensions and pics would help here.

How many nests and how often do you gather eggs?
Fake eggs in the nests can help dissuade purposely broken eggs

Forget the mustard, rarely works and just makes a different kind of mess.
Roll out nests, if built properly, can be a great solution.

Thin egg shells are almost always calcium deficiency, crushed oyster shells or even crushed egg shells will fix that.

I found that if they are eating the eggs they are lacking calcium . My wife boils the shells and crunches them back to the chickens up feeds them back to the hens . You may need to add some oyster shells to the feed .
