Egg Freshness

The floaters are the ones that are most likely far from fresh. They're supposed to sink and lay on the bottom.

That's not an absolute test, but it works well enough. If you're not sure crack each egg into a bowl before putting it into whatever it is that you are making. You'll know when you crack it.

If they float all the way to the top, I'd toss them. If they just sort of hover in the middle, they're alright for baking, but I wouldn't make a fried egg sandwich with one.

Anything I'm unsure on I feed to the dogs (pre-cracked in the bowl of course, so we don't have a mess if it was bad). I always give away eggs if we get more than 18 in the fridge at a time though, so don't really have old ones anymore.

My dog Dusti knows instantly if something is "too bad" for her to eat, and he has a cast iron stomach! I let her make up her own mind about stuff because she has proven her ability in the past.
