I have 48 eggs in my bator with a hatch date of June 28. Yesterday one of the egg developed a big crack going down it and some little cracks. I sealed it with wax. Now tonight it looks like it might be trying to hatch...that would be a week early. This egg was shipped, is it possible that a hen was incubating it for a week before it was sent and even being mailed it continued to develop? Any opinions please????

A chick trying to hatch will not make a crack going down the egg, it makes a tiny pip. It sounds like the egg may be bad or rotten. Bacteria causes increased pressure within the egg and can lead to cracking. Have you candled the egg? Sniff it?

I had candled the egg the night before it cracked. After I sealed it, all seemed fine. Now tonight it look like its trying to hatch and the new open area is more like piping. I didn't see movement or hear peeping. But my boyfriend said he saw movement. There is a smell. Not sure what to do.

Sniff some of the good eggs in the incubator and compare it to the smell of the cracked egg. If the cracked eggs just doesn't smell right, it's rotten and should be tossed immediately before it contaminates the entire hatch. Sometimes you can see the movement of the rotten yolk or other rotten embryo contents as you move the egg during candling.
