There is never a dull moment keeping chickens. Well, there are dull moments I guess. But only because you don't realize what your flocks are up to.
My birds have nice coops, large runs, time to range, and a lot of nice nesting boxes. So when egg numbers started to drop a couple weeks ago, I assumed it had to do with the cooler weather and shorter days. We took a few walks through the property to make sure our most adventurous rangers weren't laying elsewhere. No luck.
Until yesterday, when I spotted a blue egg under a bush about 15 feet away from the coop on a steep hill. We carefully investigated. It was not 1 egg. It was 1 egg that had rolled off of the mound of 19 other eggs laying in the middle of the bush.
Blue eggs, green eggs, dark brown, light brown, etc in a giant pile. I bet at least 10 hens had snuck into that nest to lay in the last week or so, right under our noses.
Lesson? Don't trust the little dinosaurs. They're sneaky.
[Some of the usual suspects]
