Hi all, this morning I was having my usual cuppa with the chickens and I noticed everyone following my golden girl. When I went to inspect, I noticed she had egg yolk coming out of her cloaca. The egg white was on the floor too. I shooed the others away and isolated her while I went to run a bath to clean her out, but when I came back out she had cleaned herself and looked fine. What should I do? How do I know she has nothing left inside her? She is a 3 year old cinnamon queen so I know she is past her laying years

Do you remember the color of the egg yolk? Did the smell wreak at all? Any solid egg material? What are you feeding her, any calcium supplements? Abdominal area feel normal?

Are you sure this hen is not laying (?) Three-year-old hens do lay eggs. Based on her symptoms, and what's happened, my best guess is she developed a soft-shelled egg in her reproductive system, and it ruptured just as she was expelling the egg. Another scenario, which is unlikely if she is acting fine, is that she has developed EYP, also known as egg yolk peritonitis, and some of the fluids that are building up in her colemotic cavity are making their way out her vent. With the latter scenario, the yolk most likely would have smelt bad, and looked 'yellow", most likely she would lethargic as well.

It sounds like she just broke a soft-shelled egg when she was trying lay, which happens on occasions, if mine, I would try giving her a calcium supplement for the next few days, something like Tums, calcium gluconate, or citrate will work. Make sure to clean the soiled feathers up well.

She may be suffering from a reproductive problem, but she also just may have had a soft shell egg break inside. I would insert a clean or gloved finger inside her vent to check for any retained membrane or broken shell. She should not be over laying eggs necessarily yet unless she has suffered a problem. I would give some calcium for a few days as well.

I also agree with the possibility of a soft shelled egg.
Chickens don't stop laying eggs because of age, they just don't lay as often. I have hens that are 7 years old, they still lay eggs but not every day or every other day. And with autumn, they have stopped laying for the season, they will start back up in the spring.

Yolk did not smell funky at all, in fact I had to isolate her as the others were trying to eat it off her poor thing so I assume it was a ruptured soft shelled egg. They get egg layer pallets and scraps and calcium powder added that we make ourselves out of the egg shells. I will increase the calcium dosage for her, mix it with tuna. She was fine all day, not lethargic and not walking funny so for now ruling out periodontitis. I will check her cloaca if she starts looking lethargic, abdomen fine, soft and not burning until last night
