Hi, We have 12 Road Island Red chicks that are 3 weeks old? Do we need a rooster to produce eggs. We were told we needed a rooster; is this true.

No you donn't need a roo to get eggs. Unless you want to raise babies and have fertilized eggs. My father-in-law was raised on a dairy farm and of course had chickens. He was insisting that you need a roo to get eggs. I have all hens no roos and I do just fine. I think its an old wives tale.

just wanted to say hi to a fellow SC'er-I'm in Easley.there is a bantam club in Anderson

no you don't need a roo for eggs

you only *need* a roo if you want baby chicks from your hens

Do not need a rooster, unless you want one.

You do not NEED one to get eggs. Sounds like someone tried to sell you a rooster. LOL

Hi!
My experience has been you do not need a rooster for eggs. You do need Layena for the hens to eat to produce eggs.

I wondered this myself and I tried it, no rooster, only chicken scratch to eat and no eggs were layed

Started feeding Layena and eggs started producing.

Hope this helps

I think all coops should have at least one Roo they are fabulous to watch and have around even if they are not housed with the hens.
