My girls are 21 week old. When should I start looking for eggs? I have two RIR, one Barred Rock. Their beaks have turned a darker red. I have not seen any squatting but they have been in the nest boxes.

Daylight hours are increasing now and RIRs from Hatcheries start at about 22 weeks normally. Usually the RIRs will start a week or two before the BRs.

You should get a fist egg early in January. Often they will sing the egg song the day before they lay the fist egg. Checking out the nest box is a close sign too.

that you have eggs soon!

What is the egg song? They are what I call "talking" like crazy.

Thanks for the information. They are not that loud yet.

What a surprise we got around noon. Gertrude gave us our first egg.
