Hi very new to this just wondered as my husband asked me on average how long do hens lay for as in how many years

Depends on the breed. Production laying breeds (breeds bred specifically to lay a lot of eggs) usually lay for about two years. Others will lay for longer, but will lay less frequently while they do.

Mine are road rock, Amber white star and a Columbian black tail

In Indiana I expect 200-260 eggs per year from my Rhode Island Reds.

Many folks will say an average laying cycle is 25 hours per bird. That would yield something like this:

365 days x 24 = 8760 hours
8760 / 25 = 350 eggs/year.

Environmental conditions play a huge roll in egg production.
