Egg Maker smells fermented

I bought Manna Pro Egg Maker for the first time today, and it has a slightly fermented smell. We noticed it when we opened the bag and dumped it into the storage container. There is no sign of mold, no caking of the feed, it just smells slightly fermented. Is this normal for this brand of crumble? I don't want to feed the girls anything that will hurt them, and there are horror stories of feed causing illness on the boards.

I am hoping that someone uses it and can tell me if the odor is normal.

Thanks.

If it smells, I'd take the rest back to the feed store.

I love Egg Maker, and my girls always lay much better when fed Manna Pro products than they do with Layena.

Unfortunately, because of costs, I end up mixing the two at times.

It doesn't exactly smell spoiled, just a bit fermented - like apple cider that has been in the fridge a bit too long or silage that is still fairly fresh. Is that a normal smell for the feed?

Thanks for the response. It's going back. Of course it is 50 lbs and in a feed tub, but my girls are too important to risk.

I agree, it is better to be safe than sorry if you have any doubts. Also, if you exchange it for another bag of the same kind of feed be sure to ask them to get one with a different lot/batch number.

Yes, that's what I did. Thenew bag smells a bit strong to me, but not like the first one. It may be that the inherent odor of the food is just different than the crumbles I was using before. The young woman who runs the department said that it smelled OK to her, but she exchanged it anyway (and they were very nice, I took in the bag and a ziplock bag of the feed along with my receipt an they didn't make me put all 50 lbs back in the sack.)

I appreciate the input.
