egg placement problem

If I let the chickens out all day to free range, I get no eggs in the nesting boxes. They like to be in the woods if they are out and rome around about 1 square acre so I haven't been able to find where they may be laying eggs. If they are in the coop all day (no run...in the coop) I have eggs in the nest boxes. Why will they not come back to the nest to lay an egg?

That coop can't possibly compare to the woods! Maybe a sort of chicken tractor in the woods that just has nest boxes in it would tempt them.
